People With Learning Difficulties (Wiltshire)
The combined populations of the United Kingdom, United States, Canada and Ireland is approximately 360 million. In these countries, where most people speak English, approximately 3.5% (12.6 million) have some level of learning difficulty and 17% of these (1.8 million), severe learning difficulty. National & Local Support These figures indicate the tremendous need to provide educational and other community support for this population. At a national level, this is being addressed by a number of major charities however, locally, the necessary support tends to be fragmented, and is usually addressed by smaller local teams.
The Film In the United Kingdom, the 'Millennium Commission' helped to fund a 15 minute film in which four Wiltshire people with learning difficulties explained some of the problems they encounter in their daily lives when interacting with the general population. In particular, the speakers ask the public to appreciate that people with learning difficulties may need more time, advice and support to carry out routine tasks - and intolerance and impatience do not improve the situation. The film shows people with moderate learning difficulties at their places of work and undertaking other tasks - highlighting their individual experiences. Also included are the observations of managers who are in charge of teams which include people with learning difficulties.
Who Should View the Film? The film provides useful information for those whose role it is to create employment or creative activity for people with learning difficulties. It is hoped the film will be used by these people in positions of community support. The film may be shown to companies and organisations to illustrate how people with learning difficulties can work and make a contribution to both the companies and organisations they may work for, as well as to society as a whole. We hope to convey the positive message that constructive activities instil a sense of self worth and a level of pride in all participants, regardless of their individual capabilities. The film and descriptive text may be viewed and or downloaded free of charge from this website. Organisations who require any sub titles (ie: alternative languages) to assist their viewing audience have permission to insert these into downloaded copies as necessary. Other Resources This website also provides information on useful organisations working on behalf of people with learning difficulties. Hopefully this will assist readers in contacting other organisations for ideas and updates on activities and schemes happening elsewhere. Getting Help With This Website If you have difficulty understanding of the nature of this website, or downloading the film, we recommend that you seek help from your local College, public library, or other local person who may be able to help. You could ask them if they would be so kind as to review the website for you and explain how to download the film, or alternatively if they could download the film for you.
